Livonia rebuilds mall, image

LIVONIA -- Three years after low-end stores and petty crimes contributed to the demise of Wonderland Mall, city officials hope a village-style shopping center on the defunct site will breathe new life into the business corridor.

"There were some problems in that mall they started losing customers. Livonia residents were unhappy about shopping in the stores they had there," said City Councilman Gerald Taylor. "Everyone is excited it's coming back and we're looking forward to it. It's going to be an $80 million to $100 million project, and a great tax revenue source for us."

Plans are progressing swiftly for the development that could generate about $2 million in city, state and county taxes. This week, project manger Schostak Bros. announced it has signed leases for the 500,000-square-foot center: Chili's, Shane's Rib Shack, Moe's Southwest Grill, Beaner's Gourmet Coffee and Supercuts should open in the fall, said spokeswoman Linda Busse.
